Smell remains on hand after washing; doubts

Question:

Asalamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarkaatuhu , 

Dear respected Mufti Saheb, I’m facing a problem with regards to purity issues and halal food. 

1. Firstly, when one uses handwash and rinses their hands , the smell remains so are there hands still considered to be impure? Therefore, can one eat using the same hands? This is a problem whenever I go into the kitchen. I think the taps/towels still have handwash on them as even if a person rinses their hands ( they only do it quickly after applying the handwash) , the smell remains so the hands are still impure. 

2. Secondly, if a bun attached to the wrapper ( the chocolate has stuck onto the wrapper ) possibly haram as the wrapper may be impure ( made out of impure substances )? How can I rid myself of these doubts?

Answer:

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The answers to your queries are as follows:

  1. In principle, if you washed your hands thereby removing the impurity, then the remanence of the smell will not affect the purity of your hands[i]. You may eat with your hands and carry out other actions with them. You may consider using odorless hand-wash.
  2.  The wrapper will not affect the purity of the food.

We advise you not to entertain doubts. Doubts are from Shaitaan. You may consider reciting the isti’aazah frequently to free yourself from unwarranted doubts.

الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين (رد المحتار) (1/ 329)

واقتصر القهستاني على تفسير الأثر بالريح فقط، وظاهره أنه يعفى عن الرائحة بعد زوال العين وإن لم يشق زوالها. وفي البحر أنه ظاهر ما في غاية البيان.

أقول: وهو صريح ما نقله نوح أفندي عن المحيط حيث قال لو غسل الثوب عن الخمر ثلاثا ورائحتها باقية طهر

المختار (1/ 35)

 فإن كان لها عين مرئية فطهارتها زوالها، ولا يضر بقاء أثر يشق زواله،

الاختيار لتعليل المختار (1/ 35)

قال: (ولا يضر بقاء أثر يشق زواله) «لقوله – عليه الصلاة والسلام – في دم الحيض: ” اغسليه ولا يضرك أثره» ودفعا للحرج.

مراقي الفلاح شرح نور الإيضاح (ص: 67)

“ولا يضر بقاء أثر” كلون أو ريح في محلها “شق زواله”. والمشقة أن يحتاج في إزالته لغير الماء أو غير المائع كحوض وصابون لأن الآلة المعدة للتطهير الماء

البناية شرح الهداية (1/ 737)

والنجاسة ضربان: مرئية وغير مرئية، فما كان منها مرئيا فطهارتها بزوال عينها، لأن النجاسة حلت المحل باعتبار العين فتزول بزوالها إلا أن يبقى من أثرها ما يشق إزالته لأن الحرج مدفوع.
