2 people praying in congregation

Fatwaa ID: 1017

As salam wa alykum,

I was recently traveling with a friend to another friends house. By the time we got that friends house we had not prayed Asr yet so we went to pray. I led the prayer and my friend stood next to me a little bit behind me. After the prayer finished our other friend came and told us that since there is only two of us it is considered a Saaf and that we should we foot to foot instead of the imam being a little bit in front of the other person they are praying with.

What is the ruling on this? Is it ok to pray next to someone and lead them at the same time foot to foot?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

When two people perform salaah together, the imaam should stand slightly ahead of the muqtadee. The muqtadee’s toes should be in line with the imaam’s heels. They should not be parallel or foot to foot.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
