4 corners of the world

Fatwaa ID: 1617

Question:
Assalamualaikum. Respected Mufti Sahib.
Does Allah Ta’alla say anything about the 4 corners of the earth in Quraan or Hadith e qudsi?
Does this appear in any Hadith?
It is often heard in talks.
About the phrase, ‘4 corners of the world’

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The phrase “four corners of the world” is an English phrase. I have not come across this exact phrase in the Islamic texts. Instead, Allaah Ta’aala uses the phrase مشارق الأرض ومغاربها which translates to the “the easts and the wests”. In some places, the dual forms are used instead of the plural. It may interest you that in modern Arabic, the phrase أنحاء العالم is used. This literally translates to “the sides of the world”. All the above phrases simply mean “around the world”. They do not indicate to the world being flat or otherwise.

It is not clear what the context of your question is. There is nothing wrong in using the English phrase or the Arabic one.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
