Accepting money back after paying for someone

Fatwaa ID: 1042

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته
Hope mufti saheb is well.
Question: If a man pays zakaat on behalf of his wife/mother/sister with their knowledge of it and after he paid it, she wants to pay him back her zakaat amount from her own wealth, would it be permissible for him to take it back from her?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, each person should pay for his/her own zakaah so that he/she feels and understands the value and importance of zakaah. The complete benefits of zakaah can only achieved if one gives his/her own zakaah. If someone voluntarily gives zakaah on behalf of someone, then that is permissible provided that consent is found.
Nevertheless, we take note of the details of the query. It will be permissible for him to take that money from his wife, mother or sister. He will be rewarded for his intentions and good deeds.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
