Adding bibi to name

Fatwaa ID: 555

Question:
Assalaamu’alaykum

Just want to enquire about adding the name “Bibi” in front of the name of a baby girl, does it has any basis anywhere or where does it originally come from?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Bibi is not an Arabic word. It comes from Persian. It is a respectful word used when addressing a woman, similar to the English words miss and Lady. Bibi is not a name and should not be officially added to a name. If one wishes to use it when addressing a woman, then that is permissible.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
