Ali (R) was stopped from polygamy

Fatwaa ID: 822

Question:
AOA. I recently read somewhere that the prophet SAW refused his daughter Hz Fatima RA’s husband Hz Ali RA’s pursuit of a second wife despite Islam allowing polygamy. Is this true?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The above is a distortion of the reality in an attempt to push the whims of some who wish to undermine the Shari’ah. This incident may not be used to undermine the permissibility of polygyny, although a person is advised to consider the feelings of his first wife. Nabi ﷺ prevented Sayyiduna ‘Ali (R) from specifically marrying the daughter of Abu Jahl, a staunch enemy of Islam. He did not prevent him from marrying a second wife as a general prohibition, although Sayyiduna ‘Ali (R) himself did not persue another wife during the lifetime of Sayyidah Faatimah (R), considering her honor as well as the fact that causing annoyance or inconvenience to her is in reality causing it to Nabi ﷺ. The exact words of Nabi ﷺ were,

“By Allaah, the daughter of Allaah’s Messenger cannot be combined with the daughter of Allaah’s enemy (as co-wives) of one person.” [Bukhaari 3110, Muslim 2449]

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
