Ankles covered in salaah

Fatwaa ID: 400

Question:
ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ
Question: if I am in the first rakaah and realise my ankles are covered, must I break Salaah list my garment and then start or can this be done whilst in Salaah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, the obligation of keeping the lower garment above the ankles is not restricted to salaah. It is applicable at all times, including out of the salaah. Nevertheless, in the unfortunate situation where you were wearing such impermissible clothing and also forgot to fold them before starting the salaah, you should continue the salaah and make istighfaar thereafter. You should not break your salaah nor should you fold them during the salaah.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
