Are parents responsible after their death?

Fatwaa ID: 1614

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Respected Mufti Saab(s) When a parent passes away. Does the actions of their children effect their status in the next life. Weather good or bad?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, it is the responsibility of the parents to give their children a good Islamic upbringing and nurturing. A child is an avenue of sadaqah jaariyah for his/her parents. If the parents nurtured the child well and the child upholds that, then the parents will continue to reap the rewards of that even after their demise. If they did their part but the child went astray afterwards, then the parents would be absolved of their responsibility and they would not be accountable for the doings of the child. However, if the parents failed to nurture their child appropriately or they facilitated the wrongs and/or did not prevent them from wrong to the best of their abilities, then they will be accountable for that.

We unfortunately find many parents in the last category. They are negligent, careless and complacent. They must wake up and take action while they have the chance. They must protect the Deen of their children and progeny.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
