Question:
Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah
The people of Musa do not seem to fast on the same day as us for Ashura anymore. The fastings listed in their 2023 calendars don’t coincide with our date.
Does the hadith instruction to also fast the 9th day or 11th day still apply if they are not fasting with us?
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
The Jews until today commemorate the day when Sayyiduna Moosa ﷺ and the Bani Israeel were saved from Fir’awn. This day is known as Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It may not always precisely coincide with our Islamic date today but it is still a single day. On their calendar, it is the 10th of Tishrei. They too observe fasting on this day in their manner. Thus, the instruction given to us by Nabi ﷺ remains: add a day before it or after it as well.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
