Asking debtor to pay zakaah

Fatwaa ID: 1020

If I lend money to someone and give him the condition that he has to pay zakat for the amount he borrowed for the number of years/periods until he pays it back. Or even the person who is borrowing gives the same offer, Will my zakat be accepted or it will be consider as riba?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The zakaah of a loaned amount is on the creditor, not the debtor. The creditor may not demand from the debtor nor accept an offer from him to pay the zakaah of that amount. That will be regarded as riba. The purpose of a loan is to help a person for the sake of Allaah Ta’aala.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
