Question:
Asalamualaikum mufti saab,

Does a woman get sin for asking her husband for a divorce, if he’s marrying a second time and she’s not happy with that fact?

If so can you please provide me the evidence for it.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, while a man is permitted to marry up to four wives, he should be considerate of the feelings of his first prior to considering a second. It is not appropriate, ideal nor healthy to marry a second without the pleasure of the first.

Nevertheless, divorce is something reprehensible unless necessary. If a wife asks for a divorce solely because the husband has taken a second wife, then that is unjustified. In a judicial court too, this will not hold valid grounds.
