Ate thinking the fast had broken

Fatwaa ID: 847

Question:
Assalamualykum mufti saab. A pregnant woman vomited in Ramadan fast and thinking her fast broke she ate. Should she do Kaffara

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala make the pregnancy easy for her and bless her with a righteous and healthy child.

In principle, if a person assumes that his fast had broken while in reality it did not break and thereby eats, then the fast will break and qadhaa will be necessary. However, kaffaarah will not be necessary in this case. In the enquired situation, only qadhaa will be necessary.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
