Attending NBA games

Fatwaa ID: 2133

Assalamu’alaikum dear Mufti Sahab, I hope you are well I had a question regarding attending nba games, I had a question personally I am usually asked to come and attend nba games Mufti Sahab but as per my previous knowledge on these games is that there is a bunch of loud music cheer leaders immodestly dressed people and alcohol in a concentrated environment but when i state these reason for not going i am given the answer “oh music you cannot control, you can just look down at the cheerleaders, there’s alcohol in malls” so i wanted to ask if it is correct for me to abstain from attending these games or do I take the advice of such people Mufti Sahab, also Mufti Sahab if it is at your ease would it be possible to give me some hidaya on how to respond to such claims jazakallahu Khair

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Your concerns and reservations are meritorious. May Allaah Ta’aala bless you and keep you steadfast upon the Deen.

A person is affected by his environment and surroundings. A Muslim must avoid places where sin in being committed. He should avoid places that are not spiritually conducive. A person will be accountable for the places he visits.

In an NBA game, there are many vices and evils. This includes the ‘awrah of most of the athletes being uncovered. The audience will definitely be looking at this. Rasulullaah ﷺ has cursed the one looking and the one being looked at. Music, alcohol and drugs are common things at such venues. A Muslim should never unnecessarily put himself near such things. Cheerleaders and inappropriately dressed people are everywhere in such places. It is almost impossible to completely avoid looking at some thing wrong there. This is aside from this being a futile event. A person will be asked on the Day of Judgment regarding how he spent every moment of his life.

You should definitely abstain from such places. The arguments presented by the people in question are fallacious and do not hold any merit. You may present the above to them and leave it to them. They are answerable for their doings and you are for yours. Do not let them peer pressure you into doing what is wrong. Continue making du’aa for their guidance. It is a pity that we have degenerated so much that many today do not even regard wrong to be wrong.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
