Backbiting Children

Fatwaa ID: 1338

Question:
Assalaamualaykum Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuhu. Is it permissible to backbite about children?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The Qur’aan has expressly prohibited backbiting without any restriction. The generality of the verse includes children. It is thus impermissible to backbite children. Children too have feelings. If they come to know of the adults speaking ill of them, they would certainly feel hurt. This would result in the relationship between them becoming negative and perhaps distanced as well. Furthermore, a person will be accountable for every word he utters. If he has nothing good to say, then he should remain silent.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
