Beef Gelatin From Muslim Countries Halal?

Fatwaa ID: 2342

Question:
Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.

With regards to candies and gummies made in Muslim Countries (such as Turkey), would the beef gelatin in the candy be halal to consume? The packaging says halal, and these are sold in Muslim-owned stores, but I just want to be safe and double check.

Examples of Brands: Yumy Yumy, Wellmade, and Haribo.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, we would like to remind you that a halaal sign does not mean much unless it is from a reliable halaal certification board. The halaal sign is one of the most abused things in the market. Similarly, being sold in Muslim owned stores does not mean anything at all.

Nevertheless, it is difficult to issue a blanket ruling as many countries import from other countries or have problematic policies. I do not have any information regarding the above mentioned brands. We suggest reaching out to reliable halaal certification boards.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
