Being stuck on memorization is a sign you shouldn’t become haafiz

Fatwaa ID: 2315

Question:
Is being stuck on memorising a half page of Quran all day and not remembering anything, are these signs of Allah not accepting you to become hafiz?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

No. Never. There is no sign that you will not be accepted to become haafiz nor is that a thing. At times, it is difficult to memorize or retain a page or portion. That is fine and understandable.

Our job is to keep trying. It is not us to retain it. That is up to Allaah Ta’aala. However, you must continue trying. And do not let the trying feel futile or cumbersome to you. You are not losing anything. The more you recite, the greater your reward and the closer you get to Allaah Ta’aala. Perhaps it may be that Allaah Ta’aala wants to hear those verses from you more. Look at it from a positive angle. It is a journey which only ends when you meet Him.

There could be various reasons why a person may find it difficult to memorize or be stuck at a place. Our mashaayikh would often advise us to check and assess our lives, spiritual and physical. Did we do something that may have earned us the anger of Allaah Ta’aala? It is vital for a student to be very cautious and cognizant of his actions and stay away from sins to the best of his ability.

A student should also check his food and be very careful of what he eats. Did he eat something haraam or doubtful? Consuming something haraam even mistakenly may affect our memory or ability.

At times, there would be other reasons such as not sleeping well or not eating well. A student must maintain a balanced schedule and diet. These have an impact on one’s ability to memorize.

Again, our job is to keep trying until our end. Never give up. Remain determined. Remind yourself that for every letter, you are receiving a minimum of ten rewards. You are reciting the words of Allaah Ta’aala. Picture yourself having an intimate conversation with Allaah Ta’aala. It is a journey of love that needs to be cherished.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
