Betting to get better grades

Fatwaa ID: 1784

Assalāmu ‘Alaykum,

If one were to make a deal with his friend in regards to academic studies along the lines of, “If I do bad this semester, I’ll pay you, and if you do bad this semester, then you’ll pay me” intending for it to not necessarily be a “bet” but more-so for the sake of feeling responsibility and motivation when it comes to performance. Would this be permissible, or would this fall under gambling?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The above is not permissible. The above will fall under gambling. There is a chance of you losing money as well as gaining money. Alternatively, you may consider donating to a charity, “If I do bad this semester, I will donate x amount to x charity”. Charity however is not only for this. When a person does good, he should also give charity as a token of expressing his gratitude.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
