Birth control pills to delay fasts, Taraaweeh for someone who is not fasting

Fatwaa ID: 926

Question:
Assalamualikum warahmatullahi wabarakatu. There’s are some sisters that asked me the following questions, kindly answer them:

Can we take birth control pills to stop the menstruation so we can do the fasts in Ramadan?

Does a pregnant or breast-feeding lady who is not fasting, do they have to pray tarawee prayers?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. It is permissible to take birth control pills to delay or stop menstruation so that one can fast the whole month of Ramadhan. However, it should be noted that the Shari’ah does not demand this. The reward of a menstruating woman is not any less than a non-menstruating woman. Nevertheless, prior to taking the pills, a woman should preferably consult her doctor.
  2. May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy for the pregnant and breastfeeding sisters. Taraaweeh Salaah is an emphasized sunnah for the month of Ramadhaan. It is not restricted to those who are fasting. Hence, she is encouraged to perform all twenty rak’ahs of Taraaweeh. If she finds it difficult, she may sit and perform the salaah. If she finds that difficult as well, then she should perform as much as she can. Her efforts and striving to obedience will have a spiritual impact on her and the fetus/child.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
