Bismillah is part of Faatihah

Fatwaa ID: 829

Question:
السّلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته
Is Bismillah a part of Surah Fathiha?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The scholars have two positions in this regard.
A. Bismillaah is the commencing verse of Surah Al-Faatihah. In this case, the final verse will be from صراط الذين to the end of the surah.

B. Bismillaah is not the commencing verse of Surah Al-Faatihah, although it is part of the Qur’aan. In this case, the least verse will be from غير المغضوب.

In both of the above cases, the total verse count of Surah Al-Faatihah is seven. The latter position is preferred by the Hanafiyyah. However, one may alternatively adopt the Qira’at perspective and thereby act upon both positions depending on the Qiraa’ah being recited.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
