Biting hangnail while fasting

Fatwaa ID: 924

Question:
Salaam, if one has a habit or unconsciously bites a hang nail or skin peeling on the side of the nail and swallows it knowingly or unknowingly, does that break the fast. If so, is 60 consecutive days fasts required or just the one.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, the above is a bad and unhealthy habit. One should refrain from this. Eating or swallowing hangnails is not permissible. Nevertheless, if one swallows it while fasting, then the fast will break. Qadhaa of one day will be necessary. However, if one forgetfullly swallowed it, then his fast will remain valid. “Forgetfully” means that he completely forgot at that moment that he was fasting.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
