Bowing the head out of respect

Fatwaa ID: 1796

Asalamu alaykum ww

I hope you’re well, my question is in regards to a japanese tradition and culture in which when they meet the slightly lower their heads as a form of respect, is this allowed

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

As Muslims, we are sensitive to the issues of tawheed. We do not bow to anyone but Allaah Ta’aala, even if it may be out of respect. Such cultures and traditions must be opposed. Accordingly, it is impermissible/haraam to bow to someone when meeting them. If one has done it in the past, then sincere tawbah and istighfaar must be made.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
