Braiding the beard for job

Question:
Asalamoalaikum warahmatullahi wa barakatuh Mufti sahab. I have a question related to beard.

I recently got accepted into a nursing program. One of the things that is required in the program is that the student has to be able to pass a respirator fit test. Currently my beard is more than a fist so the college told me that in order to pass the test you will have to shorten your beard and braid that hair so that will allow you to pass the test in order to work with patients. Can I braid my beard while keeping it to the length of one fist?Is that permissible for me to do so?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Rasulullaah ﷺ expressly advised against braiding the beard. He said,

«ﻳﺎ ﺭﻭﻳﻔﻊ! ﻟﻌﻞ اﻟﺤﻴﺎﺓ ﺳﺘﻄﻮﻝ ﺑﻚ ﺑﻌﺪﻱ، ﻓﺄﺧﺒﺮ اﻟﻨﺎﺱ ﺃﻥ ﻣﻦ ﻋﻘﺪ ﻟﺤﻴﺘﻪ، ﺃﻭ ﺗﻘﻠﺪ ﻭﺗﺮا، ﺃﻭ اﺳﺘﻨﺠﻰ ﺑﺮﺟﻴﻊ ﺩاﺑﺔ، ﺃﻭ ﻋﻈﻢ، ﻓﺈﻥ ﻣﺤﻤﺪا ﻣﻨﻪ ﺑﺮﻱء» .
O Ruwayfi’! Perhaps you will live a long life after me, so inform the people that whoever causes his beard to be knotted, ……. then surely Muhammad is free from him!” (Abu Dawood)

Accordingly, it will be reprehensible to braid your beard. You should ask for religious accommodation or consider alternative ways such as gel to make your beard appear small. If the braiding is only for the exam and not your career thereafter, and alternative methods have not proven helpful, then you may braid it for the exam only. Make sincere istighfaar thereafter. It goes without being said that it will not be permissible for you to shave or shorten your beard less than the minimum amount for the exam or for the career thereafter.

(ﺃﻥ ﻣﻦ ﻋﻘﺪ ﻟﺤﻴﺘﻪ) : ﻗﺎﻝ اﻷﻛﺜﺮﻭﻥ: ﻫﻮ ﻣﻌﺎﻟﺠﺘﻬﺎ ﺣﺘﻰ ﺗﻦﻋﻘﺪ ﻭﺗﺘﺠﻌﺪ، ﻭﻫﺬا ﻣﺨﺎﻟﻒ ﻟﻠﺴﻨﺔ اﻟﺘﻲ ﻫﻲ ﺗﺴﺮﻳﺢ اﻟﻠﺤﻴﺔ، ﻭﻗﻴﻞ: ﻛﺎﻧﻮا ﻳﻋﻘﺪﻭﻧﻬﺎ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺤﺮﺏ ﺯﻣﻦ اﻟﺠﺎﻫﻠﻴﺔ، ﻓﺄﻣﺮﻫﻢ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ اﻟﺼﻼﺓ ﻭاﻟﺴﻼﻡ ﺑﺈﺭﺳﺎﻟﻬﺎ ﻟﻤﺎ ﻓﻲ ﻋﻘﺪﻫﺎ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺘﺄﻧﻴﺚ ﺃﻱ اﻟﺘﺸﺒﻪ ﺑﺎﻟﻨﺴﺎء ﻭﻗﻴﻞ: ﻛﺎﻥ ﺫﻟﻚ ﻣﻦ ﺩﺃﺏ اﻟﻌﺠﻢ ﺃﻳﻀﺎ ﻓﻨﻬﻮا ﻋﻨﻪ ﻷﻧﻪ ﺗﻐﻴﻴﺮ ﺧﻠﻖ اﻟﻠﻪ، ﻭﻗﻴﻞ: ﻛﺎﻥ ﻣﻦ ﻋﺎﺩﺓ اﻟﻌﺮﺏ ﺃﻥ ﻣﻦ ﻟﻪ ﺯﻭﺟﺔ ﻭاﺣﺪﺓ ﻋﻘﺪ ﻓﻲ ﻟﺤﻴﺘﻪ ﻋﻘﺪﺓ ﺻﻐﻴﺮﺓ، ﻭﻣﻦ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻟﻪ ﺯﻭﺟﺘﺎﻥ ﻋﻘﺪ ﻋﻘﺪﺗﻴﻦ، ﻛﺬا ﺫﻛﺮﻩ اﻷﺑﻬﺮﻱ (ﺃﻭ ﺗﻘﻠﺪ ﻭﺗﺮا) : ﺑﻔﺘﺤﺘﻴﻦ ﺃﻱ: ﺧﻴﻄﺎ ﻓﻴﻪ ﺗﻌﻮﻳﺬ ﺃﻭ ﺧﺮﺯاﺕ ﻟﺪﻓﻊ اﻟﻌﻴﻦ ﺃﻭ اﻟﺤﻔﻆ ﻋﻦ اﻵﻓﺎﺕ ﻛﺎﻧﻮا ﻳﻌﻠﻘﻮﻥ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺭﻗﺎﺏ اﻟﻮﻟﺪ ﻭاﻟﻔﺮﺱ، ﻭﻗﻴﻞ: ﺇﻧﻬﻢ ﻛﺎﻧﻮا ﻳﻌﻠﻘﻮﻥ ﻋﻠﻴﻬﺎ اﻷﺟﺮاﺱ، ﻭاﻟﻤﻌﻨﻰ ﺃﻭ ﺗﻘﻠﺪ اﻟﻔﺮﺱ ﻭﺗﺮ اﻟﻘﻮﺱ، ﻗﻴﻞ اﻟﻨﻬﻲ ﻋﻦ اﻝﻋﻘﺪ ﻭاﻟﺘﻘﻠﻴﺪ ﻟﻤﺎ ﻓﻴﻬﻤﺎ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺘﺸﺒﻪ ﺑﺄﻫﻞ اﻟﺠﺎﻫﻠﻴﺔ ﻷﻥ ﺫﻟﻚ ﻣﻦ ﺻﻨﻴﻌﻬﻢ

ﻗﻮﻟﻪ: ” ﻣﻦ ﻋﻘﺪ ﻟﺤﻴﺘﻪ ” ﻗﻴﻞ: ” ﻛﺎﻧﻮا ﻳﻔﻌﻠﻮﻧﻪ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺤﺮﺏ، ﻭﻫﻮ ﻣﻦ ﺯﻱ اﻷﻋﺎﺟﻢ. ﻭﻗﻴﻞ ﻣﻌﻨﺎﻩ: ﻣﻌﺎﻟﺠﺔ اﻟﺸﻌﺮ ﻟﻴﺖﻋﻘﺪ ﻭﻳﺘﺠﻌﺪ، ﻭﺫﻟﻚ ﻣﻦ ﻗﺒﻴﻞ اﻟﺘﻮﺿﻴﻊ ﻭاﻟﺘﺄﻧﻴﺚ، ﻓﻸﺟﻞ ﺫﻟﻚ ﻧﻬﺎﻩ- ﻋﻠﻴﻪ اﻟﺴﻼﻡ- “.
