Burying in a coffin

Fatwaa ID: 1920

Asslamualykum, I was wondering if there is anything unislmic about burying someone in a coffin?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The sunnah and the ideal is to bury a person directly on the soil. It is contrary to the sunnah to bury inside a coffin. We understand that many states or cemeteries require the deceased to be buried in a coffin. One would be excused in such a situation. However, it would be advisable in such a case to place soil in the coffin and also turn the deceased to his/her right side.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
