Question:
Hope you are well Respectable Mufti Saab.
I had a question. Can zakat be Sadaqah tu Jāriyah?
Can zakat be used to sponsor in contruction of a Madrasah, pay/sponsor for a Madrasah as whole, sponsor a needy student?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Zakaah can be a form of Sadaqah Jaariyah if it is given towards such an avenue provided that that avenue is zakaah eligible. The funds must be given to an eligible pauper who must assume constructive possession over it. Hence, you may give it to an eligible needy student or scholar.

Zakaah funds cannot be given to sponsor the construction of an institute or to sponsor an institute as a whole. Institutes themselves are not zakaah eligible. The students in an institute may be zakaah eligible and those students specifically may be given zakaah funds.
