Candy canes during Christmas time

Fatwaa ID: 1943

Question:
Salam, what is the ruling on candies like candy canes you see for sell during this time of the year. Are they permissible to eat or buy for consumption

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

As Muslims, we are sensitive to our beliefs and values. We are averse to anything related to shirk and non-Muslim beliefs. Candy canes or the J candy has connotations to latter day Christmas traditions. There are meanings to the shape and colors of this candy. Accordingly, it should be avoided, especially during this season. If one eats it or purchases it because of Christmas, then that is obviously haraam.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
