Cat breeding and zakaah

Fatwaa ID: 1050

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته Mufti
Hope mufti is well

My wife and I breed cats. Not for income purposes but as a hobby and passion that we both share.
We do sell the kittens that we breed and that same money goes back into the cattery for the upkeep and maintenance of the cats and kittens and we don’t make much of a profit in that sense for ourselves so there’s never a set figure of how much money we have. We have ofcourse paid for our cats and seeing as the kittens are sold, we want to make sure that any zakaat required on the cats behalf is calculated correctly so we can pay accordingly and not fall short.

I’m not sure how it works in this case as we don’t have cats for set periods of time, would the zakaat amount be calculated on the value of each cat we’ve owned that we need to pay on a yearly basis?
Would zakaat be paid on kittens as we don’t keep the kittens and a good portion of the money goes into feeding, raising, housing and caring for them along with the vet bills before leaving for their new homes.

Just want to make sure how to calculate everything properly so that we know exactly what is required in terms of paying our zakaat so we can ensure it is always done on time and correctly.

Requesting duas

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your query. There is no zakaah on cats kept for breeding. Similarly, there is no zakaah on the kittens therefrom that you eventually sell. The proceeds from the sales will be subject to zakaah like any other income, i.e., if any of it remains on your zakaah date then it will be added to your total calculation. Cats are not zakaatable wealth unless you purchase them with the intention of immediate resale, in which case they will be regarded as trade goods. Based on the details you have provided, this does not apply to you.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
