Cheers by clinking glasses

Fatwaa ID: 1984

Is doing cheers like clinking glasses together even if it has water or any juice is Haraam?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

As Muslims, we have our own values. We separate ourselves from the practices and values of the non-Muslims especially if it has negative or immoral connotations. We do not follow them in their ways. Cheering, or toasting, is associated with alcohol and drinking. Moreover, in many cultures and customs, it holds superstitious and unIslamic beliefs. Accordingly, it should be avoided even though it is water or juice. A Muslim should feel disgusted to do something associated with haraam.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
