Children leaving Islam

Fatwaa ID: 353

Question:
Salam,

Let’s say you are a parent to a teenager and your child is 15-20 years of age. If your child decided to leave Islam and they become a kafir what should you do? And will you be blamed for them leaving the fold of Islam ?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala protect us all and the youth of the Muslims.

  1. This is a very sensitive issue. Make sure that you deal with it wisely. Do not do anything that will turn him away from Islam even more. Try to identify the root and cause of the issue. Have a conversation with him if you are knowledgeable in regards to those issues. If not, try to connect him with someone knowledgeable who has wisdom and experience as well. Continue making du’aa for his hidaayah.
  2. If you had done your part in providing an adequate Islamic upbringing, then you will not be accountable. However, if you as a parent failed to do that and did not give the importance it deserves, or you were not there to show them the beauty of Islam, then I fear that you will be accountable. Similarly, if you misrepresented Islam to them, then too you may be accountable.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
