Asalaam mualaikum. InshaAllah you are well. I’d kindly like to ask what’s prescribed regarding a baby boy’s circumcision in terms of by when it should be done/ should there be a ceremony thereafter or can it just be done at the hospital and that’s that?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. Circumcision should be done before the child reaches physical maturity, the earlier the better and easier. It is mustahabb to have it done on the seventh day. Nabi (S) had it done for his grandsons, Sayyiduna Hasan (R) and Sayyiduna Husayn (R), on the seventh day.
  2. There is no basis to having a ceremony for circumcision. It does not need to be announced. The ceremonies found in many cultures are often immodest and inappropriate. The circumcision should be done in the hospital and that is it. Nothing else.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
