Assalamualaikum respected Ulama
What is the permissibility of having Quranic ayaat or Ahadith written on one’s upper garments?
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
At the outset, the Qur’aan was not revealed nor given to us to be written on clothes. The Qur’aan is to be written in our hearts and our actions. The same goes for the Ahaadith of Nabi ﷺ. Nevertheless, it is permissible, albeit unadvisable, to wear upper garments that contain Qur’anic verses or Ahaadith but due respect and etiquettes must be maintained at all times and conditions.
When going to the bathroom, it should be removed or fully covered. When touching the writing itself, one should be in the state of wudhu. When put in the laundry or wash, it should be done so with respect. It cannot be treated like any other clothing. Likewise, one should be an embodiment of the message he is portraying. In most cases, it would not be possible to fully show the due respect. Hence, it should be avoided.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
