Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمةالله وبركاته
Respected Mufti
If a patient is critically ill, can they make Jam’a of salaah?
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
According to the Hanafi legal school and majority of the other legal schools, it is not permissible to combine salaahs during sickness. A person may consider delaying the Zuhr or Maghrib to just before the last moment and then perform ‘Asr or ‘Ishaa as soon as the time comes in. This is a form of jam’ as well that is permissible. It is not clear what the critical illness and the situation. If the above form of jam’ is not feasible and there is a dire case, then we suggest you consult your local scholars.
It is interesting to note that salaah remains obligatory even in difficult situations. This is because salaah is not a burden but a blessing. It allows a person to remain connected with Allaah Ta’aala and talk to Him even in difficult situations, thereby providing comfort and solace to him.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
