Compensation for leading daily salaahs and Taraaweeh

Fatwaa ID: 998

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Dear muftian kiram
A person while leading the Taraweeh, also leads the 5 daily salaah temporarily. He has requested not to be compensated for being temporary, but if he does receive a compensation, and it might be unspecified for what it is for, or it maybe for being a temporary imam, would it be permissible to take such a compensation?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, it is prohibited for one to accept a compensation or payment for leading Taraaweeh Salaah. The jurists have permitted compensation for leading the fardh salaahs on the basis of exigence. This is not extended to the Taraaweeh prayers. If one leads both or engages in other imaam related duties along with leading Taraaweeh Salaah, then he will be permitted to accept a compensation. The compensation will be for the services other than the Taraaweeh. In the enquired situation, you may accept the compensation. The masjid should ensure that this compensation or honorarium is honorable and generous.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
