Condolences to the bereaved family of a non-Muslim

Fatwaa ID: 283

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله و براكته

What should we say as condolence / taziyaat when non Muslim friends family members die?

Can we say
إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. It is permissible to extend one’s condolences to the bereaved family of a non-Muslim. You may pray for their solace and comfort during such sad moments. You may not pray for the deceased.
  2. It is permissible to say إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون upon hearing the news of the death of a non-Muslim. This is not a du’aa for the deceased but rather a reminder and a consolement for oneself and the living.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
