Consuming one’s dry skin while fasting

Fatwaa ID: 976

Question:
Assalamu alaikum, what should one do if its hard and irritating not to lick and bite their dry lips while fasting? Will it break the fast if the dry skin is consumed if it can’t be spit out such as during salah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

If dry skin is swallowed while fasting, then the fast will be invalidated. Accordingly, caution should be exercised. If there is a need to lick one’s dry lips, including when performing salaah, then that would be permitted. If it cannot be spat one, one may use his fingers to take it out of the mouth.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
