Correcting the imaam

Fatwaa ID: 1022

Question:
Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuHu

  1. If the Imam stands up fully forgetting to sit in the 2nd Rakat in a 4 Rakaat salah, then the musallis give him luqmah. Should he ignore and continue or should he sit back down
  2. Is it true that the luqmah differs when going up or down between takbeer and tasbeeh or is it always tasbih

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. If the imaam stands up fully without sitting in the tashahhud in the second rak’ah, then he should not go back down. He should continue with his salaah and make Sajdah Sahw at the end. If the musallis correct him after he has already stood up fully, then he should ignore them.
  2. Correcting the imaam in respect to postures is done by tasbeeh only. Takbeer is not used to correct him.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
