Cosmetic surgery to improve nose

Fatwaa ID: 1624

Question:
My question is whether cosmetic surgury to improve appearance of the nose is permissible. My nose deviates to the left and therefore looks bigger on my right side from cheek to top of dorsal hump. Due to this my hump looks more prominent and crooked( especially when I laugh or smile) on my right side. I went to doctors all of which say my nose deviates to the left. The first one said the that there is a slight depression in my cheek where the cheek and nasal bone meet and that contributes in why my right looks a little bigger. I went to the last doctor who said he would only shave my dorsal hump down a little from the the top on the right side to bring it down and a little from the top of the left ( but more toward the side to bring the nose toward the middle) he said that he would not break the bones of the nose from where the cheek and nasal bone meet since my tight bone isn’t severely depressed to the left an slightly tilted. He said shaving the dorsal hump down along would add symmetry to the nose and both sides and that he only breaks the bone to reposition them in extreme cases or when accidents first happen before the bone heals an sets in place. My question is that although I did injuremy right side 20 years ago ( my entire right face, eye and lip were swollen) I never went to the doctor to reset anything that may have broke. But I also have not done xrays now so I do not know if the deviation I have is natural or due to injury. I do know that the dorsal hump is most likely natural. But what bothers me isn’t really the dorsal hump it’s the exaggerated look and crookedness of it on my right side. Is it ok to shave the hump down even if it natural to make my right side look less exaggerated. Also is this only allowed if the deviation is due to an accident or is is allowed even if my nose is naturally deviated. The last doctor said he would only do the hump and just below it to fix deviation and remove hump and nothing else. So he will not change the shape of the bottom of my nose. I asked this question before and received a reply that it is permissible, but i was scared and cancelled the surgury. I don’t want to make it seem like this is an extreme deviation because alhamdu li Allah it’s not. But it is noticeable and my right side does look bigger and when I laugh or smile because the tip goes to the right but the top of that is going to the left it further exaggerates it and makes it look crooked an droopy.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy for you.

In principle, it is not permissible to undergo a cosmetic surgery for purposes of beautification. That will fall under changing the creation of Allaah Ta’aala. However, if there is a genuine need, a defect, an injury or a medical or health condition, then as a corrective measure, one will be excused to undergo a cosmetic procedure under the instruction of a competent doctor. In the enquired situation, you may undergo the procedure and bring your nose to a natural look.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
