Creditor passes away

Fatwaa ID: 1880

Assalamoalaikum wrh wbr.

  1. If money is owed to a deceased person, how should that be repaid?
  2. If the deceased are your parents then how can the money be repaid?

Jazakumullah Khyran

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. If the creditor passes away, then the debtor must return the money to his heirs. The heirs will then distribute it amongst themselves according to their respective shares.
  2. The same ruling as above will apply. In this case, the debtor will get money back according to his share of the estate.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
