Cutting nails and hair during Dhul Hijjah

Fatwaa ID: 1325

Question:
Assalamualaikum. Is refraining from cutting nails and hair in first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah a Sunnah? Or considered mustahab?

Is it recommended or required ONLY for those who are planning on having a Qurbani done?

Is there any difference in opinion within the 4 Muthaahib?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. According to the Hanafi legal school, it is mustahabb to refrain from cutting one’s nails and hair during the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah until one’s qurbaani is done.
  2. This is only for those who will be offering qurbaani. This includes those who will have others slaughter on their behalf.
  3. Yes. The Shaafi’ee legal school regards it to be an emphasized sunnah. The Hanbali legal school regards it to be waajib.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
