Asalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Hoping this email reaches you in the best of conditions physically and spiritually.

If a person is paying installments does he deduct 12 months installments or the entire loan amount when calculating zakaat ?

Answer:

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

If a person is paying long term debts[i], he will deduct only the amount payable for a year (12 months) when calculating to pay Zakaah[ii].

In determining the amount payable in Zakaah, one must consider his personal financial situation as well. You may refer to the following link for more details on the laws of Zakaah. http://www.askimam.org/public/question_detail/17114
