Dictionary of Dream Interpretation by Ibn Sirin

Fatwaa ID: 1198

Assalamu alaikum, may I know if a person with basic knowledge of deen can rely on the ibn sirine dictionary of dream interpretation for the interpretation of their dream? Is it an authentic book for the dream interpretation?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, interpreting of dreams is not as simple as opening up a “dictionary” of dream interpretation and putting together an explanation. There are many other aspects considered when interpreting a dream. This includes the dreamer and his/her situation and surroundings. Furthermore, knowledge and deep understanding of the Qur’aan and the Ahaadith play a great role in this. There is nothing concrete when it comes to dream interpretation. An interpretation may or may not reflect the reality of the matter. Should you wish to have a dream interpreted, you should refer to an experienced oneirocritic.
Nevertheless, the attribution of the book, “Dictionary of Dream Interpretation” to Imaam Muhammad ibn Sirin is questionable. Although his interpretations were regarded to be outstanding, none of the books of rijaal or history mention this book in his biographies. Furthermore, there is no such thing as “authentic” interpretation. Any interpretation of a dream is subjective.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
