Differentiating between waswasah and nafs

Fatwaa ID: 1769

Asalamu’alaikum mufti,I have a question: How can we differentiate the wishpers of shaitan and our desires (temptation)? How can we know which one is which

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

What is the benefit and purpose of your question? What difference would it make if you were able to differentiate between the two? We have been warned against both, the waswasah of the shaytaan and the waswasah of the nafs. Seek refuge from both as Rasulullaah ﷺ taught us. Work against both. Focus on rectifying yourself, engaging in righteous deeds and staying away from evil deeds. When you do so, you will be fighting your nafs and the shaytaan.

أعوذ بك من شر نفسي، ومن شر الشيطان
“I seek refuge in you from the evil of myself and the evil of the shaytaan.” [Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood]

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
