Disposing of haraam wealth

Fatwaa ID: 2272

Question:
Assalamualaikum,

If someone has a lot of Haram wealth they must dispose of, can they gradually dispose of the wealth? For example, $100 a month. And can this be set up as a recurring payment? And does the person need to make niyyah every single time before the payment is deducted from their bank acct(niyyah of disposal of Haram wealth)

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Haraam wealth must be given away in charity to the poor and needy without any expectation of reward. This should be done immediately without unnecessary delay. The longer it stays with a person, the longer he will be deprived of khayr and barakah. Haraam wealth only brings about regret and problems. It contaminates one’s wealth overall. If you have a genuine reason why you wish to give it installments, you may revert to us with details and we will advise accordingly.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
