Doctor partnering with pharmaceutical company

Fatwaa ID: 1701

Question:
Suppose Dr. X is a doctor currently working in a private hospital. He wants to
make a business agreement with a reputed pharmaceutical company in the
country that supplies drugs in local market and exports drugs to developed
countries. According to the agreement, he will write a specific drug for a
specific disease. The drug is produced by the aforementioned reputed
company. The quality of the drug is either superior to the other companies and
the price is similar or the quality and price both are similar to the competitive
companies of the country. Dr.X will write the drug in his prescription
according to the necessity or indication of the patient. By writing the drug, he
will earn money from the aforementioned pharmaceutical company. Is it halal
to get financial benefits from the company and use the money?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your query. If the doctor genuinely and honestly believes in the quality of the drugs and he only prescribes them to deserving patients without compromising their best interests, then it will be permissible for him to enter into the said business agreement. He should however be considerate of the legal laws and ethics surrounding such a business deal and ensure that he maintains his integrity and honesty at all times.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
