Donated breast milk

Fatwaa ID: 1829

Are Muslim women allowed to receive and give their baby donated breast milk?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, when donating or receiving breast milk, the donor and the recipient must be known or documented to each other. Reason being that breast milk will establish hurmah/mahram relations. Accordingly, if the breast milk is received or donated privately within close circles, then that will be permissible. If it is received from or donated to the general milk banks, then that will not be permissible. Such banks generally do not document nor inform either parties regarding the other.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
