Donating on behalf of someone as a gift

Fatwaa ID: 2030

Question:
Assalamu Alaikum respected Mufti saheb,
I have a question on gifting:
When you gift someone is it necessary to make them owner of that gift to get the reward of either gifting or accepting?
Example: I donated money on behalf of a person(without their permission or them knowing) and told them at the event that I donated $ for this cause as your gift. Would that still be considered as if I had gifted that person?
Jazak Allahu Khayran

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, for a gifting to be valid, it is necessary for the giftee to accept and assume possession of the gift. If both of these conditions are not found, then the gifting will be invalid. In the enquired situation, the donation you made would not count as a gift to them. However, it will count as a charity on their behalf for which both of you will be rewarded. When donating as eesaal thawaab for someone, it is not necessary to inform the person on whose behalf you are doing it.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
