Donating to non-Muslim victims of cyclones

Fatwaa ID: 953

Question:
If donations are collected like things etc to help cyclone affected people are we allowed to give it to non Muslims?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

As Muslims, we are considerate and compassionate to the creation of Allaah Ta’aala. This is irrespective of whether they are Muslim or not. Those who are affected by the cyclone, Muslim or otherwise, are in need of our assistance. It is permissible to donate towards them in general with nafl sadaqah. In the enquired situation, if the donations collected are general donations, i.e., nafl sadaqah, then it may be given to Muslims as well as non-Muslims. Assisting non-Muslims can also serve as a form of da’wah and allow them to see the beauty of Islam.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
