Question:
Assalmoualaykum mufti Saab.
is it permisible to draw animals , people for school artwork?

If not ,
How to explain this to muslim youngsters who will have to do it anyway?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is not permissible to draw animate objects such as animals and people for school artwork. That falls within the purview of prohibited tasweer. Severe warnings have been narrated regarding those who indulge in prohibited tasweer making. In the enquired situation, explain the injunctions of the Shari’ah to them. Advise them to request a religious exemption from the school office. Art classes are generally electives anyway. It should be noted that it will be permissible to draw animals and humans without essential body parts without which they cannot live.
