Dropped the Qur’aan, oath

Fatwaa ID: 481

Question:
Assalamu Alaykum,

I have 2 Questions:

  1. If an adult for child dropped the Quran (accidently) what must they do? Does a kaffarah need to be paid, or anything else?
  2. If a person swears by Allah (Qasm) whether in anger or normal way and does not follow through or fulfil that promise, do they need to pay a kaffarah or anything else?

    Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
    As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

    1. There is no kaffaarah for dropping the mus’haf accidentally. Istighfaar should be made. One should follow it up with some good deeds.
    2. If one takes an oath in the name of Allaah Ta’aala to do something and does not fulfill that, then he must do kaffaarah for it. The kaffaarah for breaking an oath is to feed ten people two average meals or clothe ten people sufficient clothes to cover their body. If one is unable to do either of the above, then he must fast three consecutive days. Along with the above, tawbah and istighfaar must be made.

    And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
