Earning of a cupper

Question:
[hadith: worst earning: earning of a cupper]
Could you please explain the cupper part( is it haraam to charge )

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Nabi ﷺ advised against such a source of income. Cupping as a profession was considered a lowly and menial occupation. The Shari’ah encourages a person to opt for noble and respectable professions. Cupping further involves a person with impurity. In many cases, the blood would have to be sucked out with a horn. There was thus a possibility of blood going into the mouth. Notwithstanding this, Nabi ﷺ himself paid a person who did cupping for him. That shows the permissibility of the income. Accordingly, the earning of a cupper is permissible, albeit unadvisable.

ﻗﺎﻝ: (ﻭﺗﺠﻮﺯ ﺃﺟﺮﺓ اﻟﺤﺠﺎﻡ) ﻓﻘﺪ ﺻﺢ ﺃﻧﻪ – ﻋﻠﻴﻪ اﻟﺼﻼﺓ ﻭاﻟﺴﻼﻡ – «اﺣﺘﺠﻢ ﻭﺃﻋﻄﻰ اﻟﺤﺠﺎﻡ ﺃﺟﺮﻩ» ﻭاﻟﻨﻬﻲ اﻟﻮاﺭﺩ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻟﻹﺷﻔﺎﻕ ﻟﻤﺎ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺪﻧﺎءﺓ ﻭﺑﺈﺟﻤﺎﻉ اﻟﻤﺴﻠﻤﻴﻦ.

ﻗﺎﻝ (ﻭﻳﺠﻮﺯ ﺃﺧﺬ ﺃﺟﺮﺓ اﻟﺤﻤﺎﻡ ﻭاﻟﺤﺠﺎﻡ ﺇﻟﺦ) اﺳﺘﺌﺠﺎﺭ اﻟﺤﻤﺎﻡ ﻭاﻟﺤﺠﺎﻡ ﻭﺃﺧﺬ ﺃﺟﺮﺗﻬﻤﺎ ﺟﺎﺋﺰ، ﺃﻣﺎ اﻟﺤﻤﺎﻡ ﻓﻠﺠﺮﻳﺎﻥ اﻟﻌﺮﻑ ﺑﺬﻟﻚ ﻭاﻟﻘﻴﺎﺱ ﻋﺪﻡ اﻟﺠﻮاﺯ ﻟﻠﺠﻬﺎﻟﺔ ﻭﻟﻜﻨﻪ ﺗﺮﻙ ﻹﺟﻤﺎﻉ اﻟﻤﺴﻠﻤﻴﻦ. ﻗﺎﻝ – ﺻﻠﻰ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ – «ﻣﺎ ﺭﺁﻩ اﻟﻤﺴﻠﻤﻮﻥ ﺣﺴﻨﺎ ﻓﻬﻮ ﻋﻨﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺣﺴﻦ» ﻭﺃﻣﺎ اﻟﺤﺠﺎﻡ ﻓﻠﻤﺎ ﺭﻭﻱ «ﺃﻥ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ – ﻋﻠﻴﻪ اﻟﺼﻼﺓ ﻭاﻟﺴﻼﻡ – اﺣﺘﺠﻢ ﻭﺃﻋﻄﻰ اﻟﺤﺠﺎﻡ اﻝﺃﺟﺮﺓ» ﻭﻷﻧﻪ اﺳﺘﺌﺠﺎﺭ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻋﻤﻞ ﻣﻌﻠﻮﻡ ﺑﺄﺟﺮ ﻣﻌﻠﻮﻡ ﺑﻼ ﻣﺎﻧﻊ ﻣﻌﻠﻮﻡ ﻓﻴﻘﻊ ﺟﺎﺋﺰا

ﻭﻛﺬا ﺃﺟﺮﺓ اﻟﺤﺠﺎﻡ ﻭاﻟﺤﻼﻕ، ﻧﺺ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻓﻲ ” اﻟﻔﻮاﺋﺪ اﻟﻈﻬﻴﺮﻳﺔ ” ﻭاﻟﻘﻴﺎﺱ ﻳﺄﺑﻰ ﺫﻟﻚ، ﻷﻧﻪ ﻻ ﻳﺤﺘﺎﺝ ﺇﻟﻴﻬﺎ ﻓﻲ ﻋﻤﻮﻡ اﻷﻭﻗﺎﺕ، ﻭﻟﻜﻦ ﻫﺬا ﻣﻦ ﺻﻨﻴﻊ اﻟﺘﺠﺎﺭ ﺣﻴﺚ ﻳﺘﻨﻈﻔﻮﻥ ﺑﺈﺯاﻟﺔ اﻟﻮﺳﺦ ﻭﻗﺺ اﻟﺸﺎﺭﺏ ﻭﺣﻠﻖ اﻟﺮﺃﺱ ﻟﺘﺰﺩاﺩ ﺭﻏﺒﺎﺕ اﻟﻨﺎﺱ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻤﻌﺎﻣﻼﺕ، ﻓﺈﻥ اﻹﻧﺴﺎﻥ ﺇﺫا ﻛﺎﻥ ﻭﺳﺦ اﻟﺜﻴﺎﺏ ﻃﻮﻳﻞ اﻟﺸﻌﺮ ﻳﻌﺪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻔﺎﻟﻴﺲ ﻋﺎﺩﺓ ﻓﻴﻘﻞ ﻣﻌﺎﻣﻠﻮﻩ ﻓﺼﺎﺭﺕ ﻫﺬﻩ اﻷﺷﻴﺎء ﻛﺎﻟﻨﻔﻘﺔ اﻟﺮاﺗﺒﺔ، ﻭﻛﺬا ﺛﻤﻦ اﻟﺨﺮﺹ ﻭاﻟﺼﺎﺑﻮﻥ ﺩﻭﻥ اﻟﺤﺠﺎﻡ ﻭاﻟﻔﺼﺎﺩ.
