Earnings of a woman and zakaah

Fatwaa ID: 966

Question:
I am eligible for zakat and gave it last year in the month of Ramadan Alhamdulillah. I recently started working part time around 6 months back. I was wondering if that money also eligible for zakat for this year?

Some of this money is contributed towards the family expense on and off. Rest is saved.

I want to confirm if my these earning eligible for zakat?

If the answer is yes then for better understanding,

I heard one hadith in which it says when women earns, the amount is charity.
How come zakat is eligible in charitable amount?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We understand from your query that by “eligible” you mean “liable”, i.e., you have to pay zakaah. Eligible generally means you are eligible to receive zakaah.

On your zakaah date, you will add together all the money and zakaatable assets you own and pay zakaah on the total if the total reaches or exceeds the nisaab amount. This includes all your money, including cash in hand spare change, bank balances, savings, crypto, etc. Similarly, gold, silver, investments, trade goods, etc., will also be included. This includes your earnings, including that which you have from your part time earnings, as well as your savings. It should be noted that you will assess your zakaatable wealth on your zakaah date, not just any random day of Ramadhan.

It is not clear which Hadith you are referring to. Irrespective, the earnings and zakaatable wealth of any baaligh and sane Muslim, male or female, is subject to zakaah.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
